Why Were Machu Picchu Circuits Created?

The Machu Picchu circuits were created to protect the historical sanctuary and to better manage the growing number of visitors to the Inca citadel. In 2026, the Peruvian government launched a preservation project aimed exclusively at safeguarding this UNESCO World Heritage Site for future generations by introducing the new Machu Picchu circuits.

Previously, there were only three main ticket options: the general Machu Picchu entrance ticket, Machu Picchu Mountain, and Huayna Picchu Mountain. Other routes, such as Huchuy Picchu, the Sun Gate (Intipunku), the Inca Bridge, and the Great Cavern, had fewer restrictions. At that time, up to 4,600 visitors were permitted per day. However, after the pandemic, visitor demand increased significantly, necessitating a reorganization of access and the creation of structured circuits.

Today, the new circuits have changed the way visitors explore the citadel. Some allow access only to panoramic viewpoints, while others permit full exploration of the archaeological site. The circuits are currently divided into three main categories, each including specific routes to the mountains and other attractions within the sanctuary. Availability is limited and must be booked in advance.

Machu Picchu Circuits FAQs

Explore our list of the most popular questions and answers about the Machu Picchu circuits. Here, we explain which option is best for your next trip to Machu Picchu.

There are three official circuits at Machu Picchu, and each circuit is divided into different routes:

Circuit 1 Machu Picchu

  • Route A: Machu Picchu Mountain
  • Route B: Panoramic Route
  • Route C: Intipunku (Sun Gate)
  • Route D: Inca Bridge

Circuit 2 Machu Picchu

  • Route A: Classic Machu Picchu Circuit
  • Route B: Lower Terrace Circuit

Circuit 3 Machu Picchu

  • Route A: Huayna Picchu Mountain
  • Route B: Lower Circuit
  • Route C: Great Cavern
  • Route D: Huchuy Picchu Mountain

Circuit 2 is considered the best route for fully exploring Machu Picchu. This 3-hour hike allows you to visit almost the entire Inca citadel. You can also enjoy some of the best panoramic viewpoints and take classic postcard photos of the sanctuary.

If Circuit 2 Machu Picchu is fully booked, we recommend choosing a different option. You can combine Circuits 1 and 3 to capture the best panoramic views and explore important sections of the citadel.

Remember, these circuits have limited availability, so it's important to decide quickly and book in advance.

Both routes are excellent options for exploring the site. The main difference is the starting point.

Route 2A (Circuit 2) begins at the upper viewpoint near the Guardian House. From there, you can take the classic postcard photo of Machu Picchu and enjoy spectacular panoramic views before continuing through the citadel.

Route 2B starts slightly lower, from the lower terraces near the Guardian House. From this area, you can also take beautiful panoramic photos before continuing the tour of the archaeological site.

In summary, both routes offer a complete experience of Machu Picchu. The main difference is the elevation and angle of the initial panoramic viewpoint.

Circuit 1 – Panoramic Route

With Circuit 1 at Machu Picchu, you will enjoy panoramic views of the Inca citadel, but you will not explore the interior archaeological areas.

You will hike up to the highest viewpoint, known as the Guardian House. From there, you can take the classic panoramic photos of Machu Picchu. Visitors are allowed to stay at this viewpoint for approximately one hour before returning along the same trail to exit the site.

This circuit is ideal for travelers who want the iconic photo of Machu Picchu without touring the entire citadel.

Circuit 2 – Classic Route

With Circuit 2 Machu Picchu, you will begin by following the same path up to the Guardian House viewpoint to take panoramic photos. Afterward, you will continue walking inside the Inca citadel to explore its most important sectors.

Along this route, you will visit:

  • The Main Gate
  • The Inca Quarry
  • The Temple of the Three Windows
  • The Main Plaza
  • The Sacred Rock
  • The Temple of the Condor
  • The agricultural terraces
  • The Temple of the Sun

This circuit allows you to fully explore the archaeological site and lasts approximately 3 hours inside the citadel.

If it is your first time visiting Machu Picchu and you choose Circuit 1 or Circuit 2, we highly recommend hiring a professional tour guide to better understand the history and significance of this extraordinary site.

The main differences are the routes and the areas you are allowed to visit.

With Circuit 1, you can walk up to the highest panoramic point near the Guardian House at Machu Picchu. From there, you can take the classic postcard photo of Machu Picchu and enjoy the breathtaking view. During the ascent, you will see part of the Inca citadel and Putucusi Mountain. Once you reach the viewpoint, you can admire the entire Machu Picchu sanctuary from above. However, this circuit does not include access to the lower urban sector.

Circuit 3, on the other hand, takes you down to the Inca terraces and into the lower part of the citadel. From there, you can explore important archaeological sites on a 3-hour walk. This circuit allows you to visit key areas, such as the Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Condor.

In both circuits, you can add extra activities.

Circuit 1: Machu Picchu Mountain, Intipunku (Sun Gate), and the Inca Bridge.

Circuit 3: Huayna Picchu Mountain, Huchuy Picchu Mountain, and the Great Cavern.

Each circuit offers a different experience, depending on whether you prefer panoramic views or exploring the archaeological structures up close.

Yes, it is. It allows you to explore significant areas of the Inca citadel, including the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Condor, the main urban area (Llacta) of Machu Picchu, and the Sacred Rock. You can also admire beautiful landscapes from the lower section of the citadel and walk along impressive Andean terraces.

Circuit 3 is considered the second-best option for exploring Machu Picchu, especially if Circuit 2 is unavailable.

The main difference is mountain access.

With Route 3A, you can climb Huayna Picchu Mountain. Before starting the hike, you will explore the lower part of Machu Picchu, including significant archaeological sites. After completing this section, you will continue with the ascent to Huayna Picchu Mountain.

With Route 3B, you will only explore the lower part of the Inca citadel. You will see the entrance gate to Huayna Picchu, but you will not be allowed to enter or climb the mountain.

In summary, Route 3A includes the Huayna Picchu hike, while Route 3B does not.

The duration depends on the route you choose.

If you book Circuit 3Route B, you will spend about 2.5 hours exploring part of the Inca citadel.

However, if you reserve Circuit 3 — Route A, you will have around six hours to visit Huayna Picchu Mountain in addition to completing Circuit 3. The total duration is similar if you add the Great Cavern - Route B or Huchuy Picchu Mountain - Route C because these extra hikes require more time.

Whether you include one of the mountain hikes or only the standard Circuit 3 route will determine the length of your visit.
