Today, the Ministry of Culture published the new booking program for the 2026 Inca Trail. The Ministry announced that the Inca Trail booking system will reopen on October 27, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. The system allows tour operators to secure permits for the 2026 season.
Why is it important to book the Inca Trail in advance?
The Inca Trail has a strict daily limit of 500 permits, including travelers, professional guides, trekking cooks, and porters. For instance, a group of two travelers usually requires one guide, one cook, and at least five porters.
Responsible and sustainable tour operators usually hire more porters, ensuring that each carries no more than 20 kg. Less responsible companies may employ fewer porters and overload them with equipment. This is why choosing a reliable tour operator is as important as booking early.
When is the peak season on the Inca Trail?
Once the booking system opens, permits for the high season months (April, May, June, July, and August) sell out quickly. This is the dry season, which is considered the best time to hike because the weather is more stable, the trails are safer, and Machu Picchu can be seen in all its glory.
What are the new changes for the 2026 Inca Trail permit?
Starting in 2026, the new regulation states that the Inca Trail permit will no longer include entry to Machu Picchu. Instead, the permit only allows access to panoramic viewpoints of the citadel.
